La campagne de l'été 1944 relatée dans ce volume comprenait certaines des actions terrestres les plus spectaculaires de l'armée américaine pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cela a commencé par la lutte lente et coûteuse des haies contre les efforts allemands déterminés pour contenir la tête de pont normande; il est entré dans sa phase décisive lorsque la rupture des défenses allemandes a permis la pleine exploitation de la puissance et de la mobilité des troupes terrestres de l'armée américaine ; et il a atteint le sommet de l'éclat avec les enveloppements successifs des principales forces allemandes et la poursuite de leurs restes au nord et à l'est pour libérer la majeure partie de la France, une partie de la Belgique et des parties des Pays-Bas.

Fin août, la guerre à l'ouest semblait presque terminée, mais la tyrannie de la logistique a donné à l'ennemi le temps de se réorganiser à la frontière ouest fortifié de l'Allemagne  et de retarder la reddition de huit mois supplémentaires.

Breakout and Pursuit suit la première armée américaine jusqu'au 10 septembre et la troisième armée américaine jusqu'au 31 août. L'ampleur considérable de cette campagne et son caractère partiellement improvisé ont laissé un héritage de controverses auxquelles aucune réponse définitive ne peut être apportée. L'auteur a eu libre accès aux archives et à de nombreux acteurs principaux du drame, et son récit devrait plaire au grand public ainsi qu'à l'étudiant militaire sérieux en grande tactique.
