German Armored Vehicles

While researching this book on modern German armored vehicles I was amazed to learn how many NATO countries have adopted the Leopard as their primary Main Battle Tank. I believe you will come to the same conclusion I did. I must admit the Leopard truly is an amazing weapons platform and probably the best (deployed) tank in the world.

Ukraine submitted an official request for the reexport of 14 Leopard tanks from Poland on 24 January 2023. It was
widely reported on that day that 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks drawn from active service of the German Bundeswehr stocks will be transferred to Ukraine shortly. (This came at a time when it was announced that the U.S. would supply 31 of its M1 Abrams and the British will supply 14 Challenger 2 tanks.) These announcements increase the likelihood that other countries will also supply tanks to Ukraine.

Germany had a total of (312) active, and (212) operational Leopard 2 tanks in 2021. (104) are being upgraded to the Leopard A7V standard by 2023.

Poland: Poland has a total of (249) tanks so they can afford to send some to Ukraine. Although they are not 2A6, the (108) Leopard 2A4 are being modernized to the 2PL variant with an electric turret drive and gun stabilization (in place of hydraulic one), installation of the APU, modernization of the optoelectronic system through e.g. installation of new thermal Imaging
cameras, modernization of the driver's seat and a new anti-explosion, fire and mine protection package, (105) Leopard 2A5, (2) Leopard NJ, (24) Leopard 2PL, and (10) Leopard 2PLM1.
